An architect is trained to create designs that are structurally sound, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. An architect will know construction materials, can negotiate bids from contractors, and can supervise the actual work. In many communities you are required to have an architect or engineer sign the working drawings for a structure. For most decorating endeavors, you will not need an architect but if you are planning a renovation or addition, a state-licensed professional with a degree in architecture may be essential.

Each architect has an individual style, approach to design and a method of work. So, it's important to find an architect who is compatible with your style and needs. Here are some questions to determine if your architect is right for you:

What does the architect see as important issues or considerations in your project? What are the challenges of the project?
How will he/she approach your project?
How busy is his/her schedule?
Who is your point-of-contact at the architect's firm? Is it the same person who will be designing the project?
How does the architect establish fees?
How much will your project cost?
What will you be expected to provide (if anything)?
What will the architect show you along the way to explain the project? Will you see models, drawings, or computer animations?
What services does the architect provide during construction?
