Q: I am working on a house with little ridge. The owner wants to install ridge vents. Is it plausible to install these on the hips?
A: Thanks for your inquiry. I haven't been able to get back to you before now because roof ventilation can be so complicated. The certified ServiceMagic roofing contractor I consulted referred me to his supplier, who in turn called a couple of his manufacturers' reps (including Air Vent and Cor-A-Vent) before responding.
Ridge vents are not usually recommended for hip roofs, but they can be installed if the balance of the roof area is vented with dormer vents or rotary vents-installed opposite the windward side.
Ultimately, I suggest you consult directly with a quality roofing/vent supplier which carries a wide variety of ventilation products for help designing the most suitable ventilation system for your particular project.
