Getting Started

In order to properly install a shingle roof, several guidelines must be followed to ensure safety and accuracy. Begin by placing a starter strip, which will prevent water from leaking onto the roof in between the shingles. Begin installing shingles from a bottom corner and working your way up. When installing the first row, confirm that each shingle has a slight overhang, which will allow water to drip away. Make sure that, as you progress up each row, they are lined up evenly.

Tips To Installing A Shingle Roof

When nailing shingles into place, be sure that the nails are not underdrawn. If they are not completely driven, the shingles will not stay in place as well as if the nail were properly driven. Make sure that each shingle has appropriate exposure, which is defined as the amount of the shingle not covered by the one above it. If possible, use two rust-resistant nails for securing each shingle. Use chalk to draw a line, which signifies the shingles will line up properly with their neighbor.

Installing A Shingle Roof and The Weather

It's important to remember that, when working on the roof, you need to select a day that isn't rainy or damp. If the roof is wet, it becomes slippery and dangerous to work on. It's also important to note that objects can sometimes fall from the roof, while you are working, and injure anyone who is on the ground. Ask everyone to be careful, or stay completely away from the work area. When placing your ladder, which you will use to reach the roof, make sure that it is secured and strong. You do not want to be climbing an unsecured, or shaky, ladder. Do not carry objects that are too heavy when using a ladder. It's better to make a few extra trips than to fall because of trying to carry to much material.
