Q: We would like to move our washing machine to the basement. I am concerned about the waste water plumbing due to the sewer line location and height. The sewer line is about seven feet above the basement floor and about 20 feet away from the planned location.

A: You need to talk to some licensed plumbing contractors to determine the most efficient, economical way to move your washing machine because they are specialists in sewers, moving pipes and pumps. I recommend you ask about three different plumbers who work on sewer lines (not all offer that service) to come look at your project, make recommendations and offer estimates to do the work. That is usually the best way to decide how to tackle a project as well as who to hire.

Although plumbing companies usually charge for service calls, many will offer free estimates for larger remodeling projects such as this. Just make sure you understand whether or not they will charge you for an estimate on this before you schedule appointments with them.
