Q: I need to verify the correct mix for mortar. I am doing some stone work and need mortar to go between the stones, similar to brick.
It has been suggested that I add some concrete to the mortar for strength. But I am unclear as to the correct amount of sand/mortar ratio.
A: I understand the proper mortar mix is determined by the material, but such technical detail as you are requesting is really something a working professional should address because mixing mortar is rather an art based on years of experience, and if it isn't right, the mortar can flake away. I recommend you consult with a professional mason in your area. If you can't find anyone with the time or inclination to give you enough specific advice over the phone, I bet you could find out everything you need by visiting a masonry or building supply yard, and showing the stone you intend to use to an experienced sales representative. Then buy the supplies you need.
