Q: I have a question concerning the interior of my 1950's cinder block home. I am peeling wallpaper and finding some settling cracks. Some of the cracks are in the mortar which is covering the cinder blocks while some of them are a little more pronounced. Is there a general repair that I could find at my local store?
A: It depends if it's finished cracking. And it probably is finished given that the house is so old. If the house is still shifting, the mortar will only break apart as the house continues to shift again.
If the shifting has stopped, the appropriate product will depend on whether the joints will be exposed (aesthetically) or covered up with paint, wallpaper, etc. So check with a masonry supply company to see all the options available to you.
