Q: I have a house that was built in 1952. Several years after it was built a back bedroom was added that gets so cold in the winter that I have to sleep in a front bedroom. I have baseboard heat and run an air conditioner in the summer. Do I need to add more insulation to the house?

A: Houses built then didn't have much, if any, insulation in them because energy was so cheap. Adding some blown-in insulation in your walls, and perhaps, in your attic and even under your floors would make your home much more comfortable all year.

I recommend having some insulation experts come evaluate your home and recommend the best kind(s) of insulation. They can also help you determine if you will need to add some ventilation so that you don't create any moisture problems in the process. Deciding on the cost and which professional to hire is usually a smart way to get started.

To find some reputable insulation contractors to give you some recommendations and competitive bids, please visit our site at: http://www.servicemagic.com. Fill out a service request for "Install Blown-In Insulation" (most insulating contractors offer all types). Explain in the additional detail box that you want to explore several options for adding insulation to your 1950s home so we can match you with the ideal service professional in your area.

Good luck!
