Building a Mosaic Table

Q: We have just completed a beautiful mosaic that is on a piece of three and a half by seven foot of particle board. We would like to make the piece into a kitchen table. Do you have any ideas on a design for a table that would support the weight but not detract from the mosaic?

A: You are going to need a lot of support under that table top, especially since it is on particle board. I would put six legs with a frame on top of the legs, six inches in from the sides, with cross members at least 16 inches apart. The structure underneath the table would resemble a ladder with legs on it. 1 x 6 hardwood would work fine for the frame, with ready-made legs from a lumber company. Remember, particleboard alone will warp in a day if not supported correctly.

To find a finish carpenter to put that table together for you, please visit our site at: http://www.servicemagic.com. Type "Find a Custom Cabinet Maker" (since they also build other custom furniture) into the search box. Submit a service request, explaining what you want done in the additional details box, so we can match you with the ideal service professional in your area.

Good luck!
