Q: I want to put up a wall to turn a den into a bedroom. Do I need a permit to do this?

A: In general, before undertaking any remodeling project, it is important to call your local building department and inquire about permits because the rules vary according to jurisdiction. When you hire a contractor, it is usually best to let them obtain the permit because he/she will be held responsible for making sure the work meets all local building codes and passes inspection.

You do need a permit to add a non-bearing interior wall and will need to have it inspected when it is finished. This will be necessary if you ever want to sell your home because the wall will not be on the original plans, and it would be much more difficult, if not impossible, to get a permit at that time. It is sometimes necessary to open walls or even remove alterations built without required permits or inspections.

If you need a contractor to build that wall for you, and get the necessary permits, please visit our site at: http://www.servicemagic.com. Submit a service request, and let us match you with the ideal service professional in your area.

Good luck!
